I had the new Sony XW7000 model up and running and decided why not add their new XW5000 as well. What better way to see just how their new lowest level Laser model performs comparing it their newest high end XW7000ES. Every once in awhile a new product is released at a price that seems too good to be true and it just shocks you. The XW5000ES is that product and then some. I was already blown away with amazing images from the 7000ES and then going to the 5000ES was not let down at all! It has the same X1 processing and does have 2000 Lumens going for it. All new models are coming with their new panels which are 3840 X 2160. The new design reminds me so much of the old Sony VPL-VW200 which has always been one of my all time favorites. So let's discuss the new XW5000ES and what makes it so special...
Some might complain about the lack of digital adjusting for focus and zoom/shift but that is a nonfactor once you get it dialed in the first time. The XW5000 is a Laser projector so at this price range losing the need for lamps is awesome. I will say for those that have not viewed a Laser projector before your eyes are in for a real treat. The image has a certain calmness that you just have to see. Definitely not eye fatiguing like a lamp-based projector can be. Upon turning on the XW5000 syncs rather quickly with the MX180 or the madVR Envy I tested with both of course. The Envy video processor makes any projector no matter what price range look like a 10K or above model. For purposes of this review all screenshots are with just the XW5000.
The Apple TV 4K demos looked stunning. I was impressed with how well Jurassic World Dominion looked. The dinosaurs were so clear and detailed they were literally in the room. Minions: Rise of Gru was absolute eye candy. Nicolas Cage in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is demo material for any projector. Astonishing up close details! Anne Heche's last movie 13 Minutes had some great special effects with the tornado that was terrorizing their town. Using Cinema 1 for movies yielded excellent results. The XW5000 does well with any movie you throw at it. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone...

Of course my one and only complaint is lack of 3D. We have nearly 200 Blu-ray 3D movies and that is a deal breaker for us. The vast majority may be fine with that however. With its 2000 Lumens the amount of brightness can definitely handle it.
There's just something special that the Sony brand has with their projectors. The color, sharpness and their smooth motion are all traits. The last few years we've added their Laser feature. Luckily the XW5000ES has all of that. I plan to add more to this report in the near future. For now I will say depending on your budget or what you're willing to spend the XW5000ES will go miles for your money!
